Review: Hot Ones February 2022 Box

Jekyll & Hide by 13 Angry Scorpions

Last but certainly not least, a hot sauce from the outback! Jekyll & Hide from the Australian based 13 Angry Scorpions is at the top of Scoville scale in this months box, and sits at the #7 spot in the shows lineup for this current season.

As per the label, this is a barbecue style hot sauce. Look over the ingredients, and you’ll quickly realize that short of the peppers, you’ll find most of the same stuff that’s in your favorite store-bought or homemade BBQ sauce recipes.

Now this doesn’t have much to do with the sauce itself and more-so the packaging, but I really like how 13 Angry Scorpions adds a little pull tab at the base of the cap to easily peel away the plastic. There’s also a neat little gold inlay (similar to those golden chocolate coins we all secretly love) with “13AS” at the top of the bottle that adds a nice touch.

Jekkyl & Hide is smooth, but a much thicker sauce from the other 2 in this months box. And not unlike many other BBQ sauces, it might require a tap at the base of the bottle to get it flowing out. Just be cautious with those taps though, cause this one packs a punch.

Against my better judgement, being that this is my first full box review, I decided to take a straight sample taste from the bottle. Much to my surprise, I wasn’t instantly regretting that choice like I’ve had happen before with superhots that feature the scorpion. The initial taste for me was sweet and tangy, but with a more than tolerable burn that didn’t have me instantly reaching for a drink. If you put a good amount on some ribs or something like a western BBQ style burger though, both of which sound delicious by the way, you’re certainly going to feel it. The heat lingers for a good bit too, but a little of the sweetness sticks around, making it more enjoyable than painful.

BBQ sauce in general is one of those condiments that’s kinda take it or leave it for me. It’s not that I don’t like it, it’s just that if I’m smoking something at home, a dry rub is my go to. Same goes for a BBQ joint, I’m going to order something with a dry rub before something drenched in sauce. Don’t get me wrong, this sauce is tasty, but it’ll likely last me a good while being that I don’t reach for a BBQ sauce often. If you’re a BBQ sauce fanatic though, this hot sauce is definitely for you.
